Service To The Community

This is definitely "what we are talking about." On Saturday, May 1, the First Baptist Church of Athens sent a crew of their membership to our shelter to work on needed projects. The group had checked with us earlier to plan the projects that they would do. The group arrived at 8:30 and were done by 11:00. They came with pre-constructed covers for 8 outdoor kennels, pruned about 20 large trees, planted "color" planter pots to enhance our facility, and arranged our outdoor adoption visitation area. The improvement was amazing. The Church had done similar projects for us last year. These people are just unbelievable.........other church members were in other parts of town doing deeds for other groups. All involved are so eagar to work. This church has a lesson for us all.........reach out and be of service. Lots of "tail waggings and purrs" to the First Baptist Church.....again!

Animal Rescue

On January 13, 2010, one of our board members overheard a conversation about a number of dogs living in a very "bad situation". Apparently there was no help for these animals through normal channels. Our board member spoke with the complaintant to get details. Later that day, she was joined by another board member to drive by the residence and to again talk with the complaintant.
There were three dogs visible from the street. The condition of the dogs was reason for alarm. After getting our cruelty investigator and our shelter director to drive by the residence, it was decided that we would approach the Police Department in Tool where the residence is located. On Thursday, January 14, a Tool Police Officer allowed our cruelty investigator to accompany him to the residence to check on the condition of the animals there. Fourteen adult dogs and three puppies were found to be living in horrific conditions. On Friday, with the help of the Tool Police Officer, two board members and our cruelty investigator visited the owner of the dogs at the residence. It was explained to the owner that we intended to ask the presiding court to hold a hearing accusing her of 17 counts of animal neglect and numerous counts of animal cruelty. That could be avoided if she would sign the animals over to us for rehabilitation and potential adoption. The owner agreed. She told us that the animals came from a shelter in Terrell and that she is frequently called by that shelter to take animals from them. She is recognized as an "animal rescuer."

All of the animals are now at our shelter and need new homes. A slide show of some of the photos taken of the animals while they were still at the "rescue!!!!!" location can be seen here.

Zelda Goes North

Zelda, a Sharpei/Lhasa mix, that came to the shelter with her four brothers and sisters at the "ripe old age" of five weeks, left Saturday with her new family going to Indiana. Her adoptive family drove through the night on Friday to come to the shelter on Saturday to meet Zelda. Tears were flowing as Zelda packed her bags for her long trip to her new home up north. The only siblings waving goodbye were Mega and Fonzie......... They are waiting to find their new home.

HCHS'S AMY STEPS UP!!!

Wednesday afternoon, our shelter director, Amy, was staying late to finish the day when she received a call from the Athens Animal Control Officer. He was bringing in a large dog that had been hit by a car. He suspected that the dog was critically injured and wanted Amy on site. While he was in route Amy called Norma to consult concerning the steps to take with the injured animal..They agreed to talk again after Amy assessed the dog. At that point in time vet offices were closed. The dog came to the shelter with "bad" head trauma, but it was alert. The dog was a male, very large breed. Amy and Norma decided to place the dog in a quiet room in the office area with comfortable bedding and cover to await a vet trip the next morning. Amy is not a "wait a while" person. She went to the location where the dog was picked up. It was early evening and people were arrivng home for the day. She went house to house along the highway until she found the dog's owner. The owner followed her back to the shelter to retrieve "Rocko" the mastiff. "Rocko" had managed to escape his fence and made his way to the road. We do not know at this time how "Rocko" is doing, but he is at home with his family. We will update you later.

HAPPY TAILS!!

A volunteer at the shelter thought that he recognized "Tug" as his family member's lost dog. Later that afternoon, the family member came to see if "Tug" was indeed their lost dog. Shaggy, as he was known to his family, was reunited with his forever family!!!
